Models are no strangers to art parties. But now Coco Rocha is taking her involvement in the craft to a new level, as she’ll pair with Mad Men’s Bryan Batt to host the first young patron’s gala at the Museum of Art and Design.
Come October 14, the supermodel and actor will welcome guests to the Paperball with tunes by Harley Viera Newton. This first look toward a younger audience of art lovers will celebrate the new exhibit “Slash: Paper Under the Knife” full of creations made out of paper.
To continue the trend, designers and artists, including Matthew Williamson, Craig McDean, James Rosenquist, Issey Miyake, Gemma Kahng, Slava Mogutin, Donald Deal, Yeohlee Teng, and Lela Rose, created dresses and accessories from paper. So does this mean the dress code will be paper-made as well?

While “mogul” might not be the first word that comes to mind when you hear the name Coco Rocha, it’s certainly what she’s becoming. Model, reporter, blogger, and spokeswoman, the hair-chameleon who hails from Canada is doing it all. We caught up with Coco last night at the launch party for MCM New York bags and asked the model about her latest venture as the new face for the brand.
The event took place at Saks Fifth Avenue, one of the few stores where the bags will be sold. Harley Viera Newton provided the tunes, sticking mostly to oldies but also sprinkled some Jay-Z, Phoenix, and MGMT into the mix.
On top of walking several shows for New York Fashion Week, Coco rocked the red (well, more like purple) carpet on the fifth floor of Saks to launch the line, which was designed by the renowned Joy Gryson. True to her roots, Coco wore a gorgeous dark purple dress by a Canadian designer and carried—what else?—a black MCM New York bag. As for her ever-changing hair color, last night it was chocolate brown.
Although the evening still felt like summer, we asked what she’s most looking forward to when the cool weather comes knocking. “I have all these jackets and coats and I can’t wear them!” So she’s ready for the New York City chill? “I’ve been ready,” insists Coco. Us too!
As for what she does for fun when the temperature drops? “I hang out with my friends, watch movies. I also just bought a house about a year ago with a veranda, so we like to dance around on it. Oh, wait. Guess I can’t really do that in the winter.” That’s okay, Coco. You can dance if you want to!

ROLE MODEL: COCO ROCHA Discovered at an Irish-dancing competition in her hometown of Vancouver, six years ago, Rocha has been jigging down the hottest runways ever since. The former FLARE cover girl famously signed an exclusive contract with Steven Meisel and recently did TV spots as a correspondent for E! Canada. Beauty within: “The girls who have a voice and an individual personality are the ones who make it,” says 21-year-old Rocha. Muse and mentor: Educating young girls on body issues has become a passion for Rocha, who now leads speaking tours at high schools. “Talking to these girls about self-esteem is inspiring; it keeps me going.”
